I love aqueducts!

Well, I don't know about love...but they are pretty cool!

On Tuesday of this week I visited a town called Segovia. Segovia lies 50 miles outside of Madrid and it is most famous for it's 2,000 year old Roman aqueduct. The aqueduct is pretty impressive at 100 feet high and 2,500 feet long. It is constructed of 20,000 granite blocks, with out the use of any mortar or concrete to bind them together.  To this day the aqueduct can still carry a stream of water, now that is craftsmanship, eh?

The bus ride to Segovia was about an hour long. I really enjoy taking buses to places outside of Madrid as it gives me an opportunity to view the Spanish countryside. This time, the plant life and mountains remind me of parts of Southern California. All that was missing was the smog!

Can you spot the super tourist?
After we saw the aqueduct, we walked around the rest of Segovia to see the cathedral and the alcazar. Alcazars are palaces and, from what I understand, each major city has their own. We went inside Segovia's alcazar and even opted to pay the extra 2,00 to go to the top of it's highest tower. The view was breathtaking, a well spent 6,50€ indeed.

Segovia also boasts a large cathedral that sits in its main plaza, Plaza Mayor.

Plaza Mayor
This selection of souveniers made me giggle...can you guess why?
Segovia is small enough to enjoy in just a few hours, the day was relaxing and I always enjoying seeing new things. This week, school was very easy and quick since we only had to go two days. I must be doing something right as I was asked to substitute for a professor who is out sick until Tuesday. This weekend has been very uneventful so far. The rain makes me want to stay inside and do nothing, but I guess that's okay to do every once in a while. I hope everyone is having a great weekend...more to come soon!
